Fairways Course

Pro's Tips

There are good and bad days on the golf course but even on a good day we'd all like to play that little bit better. We all need a head start sometimes, especially if you've never played the course before. That's why we've developed a set of pro's tips for Birley Wood Golf Course to help improve your score. The pro's tips provide you with useful tips on how to play each hole and master the Fairways course!

Fairways Course

Hole 1: A nice easy opening par 4 requiring a carry of 200 yards to clear a fairway bunker leaving only a short pitch to the green. Alternative option is to lay up short of the bunker leaving a medium iron approach. Out of bounds left and at the back of the green.

Hole 2: For an easier approach to the green a drive down the left of this slight dogleg right is required. Two bunkers at the front guard a small green.

Hole 3: A short par 4 with a blind uphill tee shot. The woods run all the way up the left of the fairway to the green. A good tee shot up the right leaves only a short pitch to a narrow green.

Hole 4: A long par 5 requiring a good straight drive. If the wind is in your face it could still be a fairway wood and a pitch to a small McKenzie green. Be happy with a 5 on this stoke index 1.

Hole 5: A large right to left slopping green awaits a medium iron tee shot. Anything left will leave a tricky chip.

Hole 6: The fairway slopes left to right all the way to the green on this long par 5. Play each shot down the left hand side to avoid trouble. Should be happy with 5.

Hole 7: A tricky par 3 requiring a short iron. A tee shot played short and right could be rewarding if the ground is firm. Virtually impossible to pitch the small green and get it to hold.

Hole 8: A short par 4 dogleg right that can be reached off the tee. For the shorter hitters a drive to the corner leaves a wedge to the green.

Hole 9: A good tee shot is required on this long dogleg right par 4. Depending on the wind direction a long iron or even a fairway wood is required to reach a well-protected green.

Hole 10: A long uphill par 4 requiring a solid straight drive. A blind approach shot to a green guarded by bunkers left, right and to the back.

Hole 11: Accuracy is more important than distance on this slight dogleg right short par 4. With out of bounds left and right and a fairway bunker at about 200 yards from the tee an iron or fairway wood off the tee is recommended. A bunker front left protects a fairly large McKenzie green.

Hole 12: A short uphill par 3 with out of bounds right. A large target with bunkers front left and right.

Hole 13: A tee shot slightly right of the marker post will leave a medium iron approach. There is out of bounds all the way down the right and a large fairway bunker to the right awaiting the longer hitters. A small bunker to the right is the green's only protection.

Hole 14: A nice par 3 protected by a ditch at the front of the green and a greenside bunker front right.

Hole 15: A tee shot slightly left of the marker should finish in the center of the fairway. Once the marker post is reached the fairway slopes downhill and right to left. A single bunker protects the green on the left.

Hole 16:
A short par 4 offering a real birdie opportunity. The fairway is wide with the only hazard is a greenside bunker on the right. Anything long could leave a tricky chip back.

Hole 17: Bunkers front left and right protect this downhill par 3 therefore an accurate tee shot is required. Wind direction will determine club selection.

Hole 18: A wide fairway which slopes from left to right. A good tee shot will leave a short to medium iron to a large green. Avoid missing to the right.
